Otago Movement & Balance Programme

Building strength, improving balance and helping you stay independent.

Staying active isn’t just about keeping fit—it’s about maintaining the confidence and strength to continue enjoying everyday life.

The Otago Exercise Programme is a gentle, evidence-based programme designed to improve strength, balance and mobility, helping to reduce the risk of falls and support independent living.

At The Roade House, our classes are delivered in a friendly, supportive environment where everyone works at their own pace. Whether you’re returning to exercise after many years or simply looking to feel steadier on your feet, you’ll receive plenty of encouragement and guidance throughout.

What is the Otago Exercise Programme?

Originally developed by researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand, the Otago Exercise Programme has been widely used around the world to help older adults improve strength and balance.

The programme focuses on simple, practical exercises that become increasingly challenging as your confidence and ability improve.

Unlike many exercise classes, every movement has a purpose—helping you move more confidently in everyday life.

Who is it for?

Our Otago classes are ideal for anyone who would like to:

  • Improve balance and stability

  • Build strength in the legs and hips

  • Feel more confident walking outdoors

  • Reduce the risk of falls

  • Maintain independence

  • Return to gentle exercise in a supportive environment

  • Improve confidence after illness or a period of inactivity

No previous exercise experience is needed.

What happens in class?

Classes are friendly, relaxed and suitable for all abilities.

Many of the exercises are performed using a chair for support, allowing you to work safely and confidently. As your strength and balance improve, exercises can be adapted to suit your progress.

Sessions include exercises that help improve:

  • Leg strength

  • Balance

  • Walking confidence

  • Coordination

  • Mobility

  • Everyday functional movement

Our aim is never to push you beyond your limits, but to help you gradually become stronger and more confident over time.

Why strength and balance matter

As we get older, it’s natural to lose muscle strength and balance if we don’t continue to challenge them.

The good news is that these qualities can be improved at any age.

Regular strength and balance exercises can help make everyday activities feel easier—from climbing stairs and carrying shopping to getting out of a chair, walking on uneven ground and enjoying holidays with confidence.

Small improvements made consistently can have a significant impact on quality of life.

A Friendly Community

One of the things our participants enjoy most is the welcoming atmosphere.

Classes are relaxed, supportive and often include plenty of laughter along the way. Many people arrive feeling nervous but soon discover that everyone is there for exactly the same reason—to move a little better and feel a little stronger.
