Beginner’s Guide
New to Yoga? You’re in the right place.
If you’ve never been to a yoga class before, you’re not alone.
Every week we welcome people who are trying yoga for the very first time. Many tell us they nearly didn’t book because they thought they weren’t flexible enough, weren’t fit enough, or simply wouldn’t know what to expect.
The truth is, you don’t need to be good at yoga to start yoga.
You simply need to arrive.
Our classes are designed to be welcoming, supportive and accessible. Your teacher will always offer different options throughout the class, so you can work at a pace that feels right for your body.
“I’m not flexible.”
That’s probably the sentence we hear most often!
Flexibility isn’t a requirement for yoga—it’s something that often improves with regular practice.
Think of it like saying you need to be fit before joining a gym. Yoga helps you develop flexibility, balance, strength and confidence over time.
“I’m worried I’ll hold everyone up.”
Please don’t be.
Everyone in the room was a beginner once, and nobody is comparing themselves to you.
Our teachers will guide you through the class and encourage you to take breaks whenever you need them. There’s absolutely no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
What should I wear?
Choose something comfortable that allows you to move easily.
Leggings, joggers, shorts or loose-fitting exercise clothing are all perfect. A T-shirt or comfortable top is ideal.
Yoga is practised barefoot, so there’s no need for special footwear.
Do I need to bring anything?
We provide everything you’ll need for class, including:
Yoga mats
Blocks
Bolsters
Blankets
Straps
Cushions
If you already have your own mat, you’re very welcome to bring it, but there’s absolutely no need.
Which class should I choose?
If you’re completely new to yoga, these classes are a wonderful place to begin:
Gentle Yoga
Gentle Stretch & Restore
Restore Your Calmness
Midweek Reset
Monday Unwind
If you’re looking for something a little more active, don’t be afraid to try:
Soft Strength Yoga
Thrive Yoga
Mindful Flow
Not sure which class is right for you? Just get in touch—we’re always happy to help.
What happens when I arrive?
Please aim to arrive around 10–15 minutes before your first class.
We’ll show you where everything is, help you get settled and answer any questions you might have before the class begins.
Many of our members come on their own, so don’t worry if you’re arriving by yourself—you’ll receive a warm welcome.
Do I have to be able to get up and down from the floor?
Not necessarily.
Many movements can be adapted, and we always encourage you to work within your own comfort level.
If getting down to the floor is difficult, please let your teacher know before class so we can offer suitable alternatives.
We also run our Otago Strength & Balance classes, which include chair-based exercises designed to improve strength, balance and confidence.
What if I have an injury or health condition?
Please let your teacher know before class.
Yoga can often be adapted to suit many injuries and health conditions, and we’ll always do our best to help you practise safely.
If you’re unsure whether a class is suitable, simply contact us before booking—we’re happy to advise.
What if I can’t do everything?
That’s completely normal.
Yoga isn’t about achieving the “perfect” pose.
Some days you’ll feel stronger than others. Some movements will feel easy, others more challenging. The important thing is listening to your own body and enjoying the journey.
Progress in yoga isn’t measured by touching your toes—it’s measured by how you feel.
