The River

There’s a famous quote by the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus: “A man cannot step into the same river twice, for he is not the same man, and the river is not the same river.” I have been using this quote a lot this past week.  I love how this idea speaks to the inevitability of change in life, the notion that both we and the world around us are constantly in flux. But I wondered what if we applied this concept to something as seemingly mundane as our weekly routine?

Every week, we go through a familiar cycle—work, exercise, chores, social engagements, maybe even a bit of relaxation. At first glance, it might seem like we’re simply repeating the same motions, like stepping into the same river over and over again. But just as Heraclitus observed with the river, neither we nor our week is ever exactly the same.

Each day brings new experiences, emotions, and challenges. We learn, we grow, and we adapt, often without even realising it. The person who begins the week on Monday is not the same as the person who finishes it on Sunday. We carry with us the subtle transformations that occur with every interaction, every thought, and every decision we make.

The “river” of our week also changes. External factors—like unexpected events, conversations, or even the weather—alter the flow of our routine. What seemed straightforward on Monday may have transformed by midweek, and by the weekend, we often find ourselves reflecting on a week that was not at all what we anticipated.

This realisation is powerful. It reminds us that even in the comfort of routine, there is growth and change. Our routines may feel repetitive, but we are constantly evolving, refining our perspectives, and adapting to new circumstances. Recognising this allows us to approach each week with a sense of curiosity and openness, rather than a feeling of monotony.

So as you step into this new week, remember that it’s not just another sequence of the same old days. You are not the same person you were last week, and this week, though it may appear similar, holds the potential for new insights, experiences, and growth. Embrace the changes, however small, and acknowledge the ways in which you, like the river, are continuously flowing and evolving.
